We bought my son a Geopuzzle of Europe, and he was crazy about it. (Geopuzzles are wonderful puzzles of the continents. Each puzzle piece is shaped like a country.) So we bought all the other Geopuzzles in existence. After mastering the puzzles he wanted to know the names of the countries and capitals, and then asked me what the people are like who live in all of these places. (What do they look like, what do they eat, what do they do?) Great questions, but I didn't know where to search for the answers.
Then I discovered the book "Children Just Like Me" by Anabel Kindersley and Barnabas Kindersley. It contains gorgeous photographs and interviews of children from all over the world. You learn about the kids schools, favorite foods, houses, religions, and interests. I was intrigued, and had to read the entire book myself. Of course A thoroughly enjoyed it, and reading it with him led to many interesting questions about other cultures. His favorite child is Celina, a little girl who swims and plays in the Amazon rain forest in Brazil and never has to wear shoes.
He also enjoys the "National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers." We were disappointed with the National Geographic Little Kids magazine though, because it mostly contained articles on baby animals. Maybe we'll try their magazine for kids ages 6-up- it looks more stimulating.
